Questioning Milgram’s 6 Degrees of Separation theory, -in which he states that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than for intermediaries. NyK went to rural areas in China and tried to make a connection between themselves through four Chinese farmers. Surprisingly none of them had ever met a foreigner nor someone who could make the connection between N and K. Using chroma key paint, K removes her identity with a few strokes of her hand slowly becoming a Chinese farmer. This happens with three other Chinese farmers, the last one becoming N, giving a finale to the experiment.
Bitshift is compressed six times with six different video compressions, creating a pixelation that evokes the loss of identity of these Chinese farmers and their incapacity to be part of a global and unifying theory, such as Milgram’s six degrees of separation, questioning the core of the theory. The sound was also created based on this theory, by using small samples of one composer and creating a chain of six intermediaries through the musicians’ “My Space” account.
Cuestionando la teoría de los 6 grados de separación de Stanley Milgram, fuimos a zonas rurales en China donde tratamos de generar una linea de conecciónes entre NyK, a través de campesinos Chinos. Sorprendentemente no fuimos capaces de crear esta conexión ya que ninguno conocía a un extranjero, menos a un Chileno, y ninguno había utilizado el internet. La teoría de Milgram actualmente está muy en boga debido al uso de sitios como myspace, sin embargo nuestro experimento prueba que la teoría solo es posible dentro de un estrato social. A través de la técnica chroma key, Katiushka se borra la cara con su mano, mientras aparece lentamente la imagen de uno de los campesinos, quien también se borra su cara y así progresivamente, hasta llegar a Nico.
Bitshift se comprimió 6 veces, con 6 sistemas de compresión de video diferentes, creando una pixelación que borra las identidades de los personajes, aludiendo a su irrelevancia social y su incapacidad a pertenecer a un universo global y unificado, propuesto por Milgram, cuestionando así, el esencia de la teoría.
